Gas line ruptures in Hawai'i Kai

Advertiser Staff

Workers from The Gas Company are making emergency repairs to a synthetic natural gas pipeline under Kalaniane'ole Highway near Hawaii Loa Street that was damaged this morning when a contractor apparently drilled into the line a little after 10 a.m.

Company spokesman Steve Golden said workers hope to rig a bypass line so that gas pressure can be restored as quickly as possible to customers on the Hawai'i Kai side of where the break occurred.

The makai-most lane on the Hawai'i Kai-bound side of the highway was coned off earlier today to allow the contractor to work and will remained closed while the pipe is repaired, Golden said.

"The damaged pipe is several feet under asphalt and concrete so it will probably take several hours just to get to it," Golden said.

He said it is likely that repairs could last past the point where afternoon commuters are headed home.
