1945: Remnants of three German field armies surrender to American forces in northwestern Germany, Denmark and Holland.
1951: The world premiere of "Go For Broke," the MGM motion picture story of the exploits of members of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, is held at the Waikiki Theatre.
1954: City Engineer William Vannatta has recommended traffic signals on Beretania and King streets be synchronized to help reduce heavy through-city traffic congestion, The Advertiser reports.
1984: State House Speaker Henry Peters is appointed a trustee of Bishop Estate. Peters insists there is no conflict of interest.
1990: Star of the Sea Catholic Church, the so-called "Painted Church" that served Catholics in the Kalapana area for almost 60 years, is moved out of the path of a lava flow. The lava from the Kilauea eruption had almost encircled the center of Kalapana Village, sparing the Kalapana Store and the Kalapana Mauna Kea Congregational Church.
1994: The Navy cruiser Lake Erie, which was docked in Pearl Harbor, inadvertently fires two 20mm rounds from an anti-missile weapon toward 'Aiea.
2002: The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team wins the school's first NCAA men's championship by upsetting top-ranked Pepperdine. The title was later taken away from UH because it used a player with professional experience.
