NAVY PLANNER RECOGNIZED

Byrnes Yamashita, base development division director for Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Pacific, has been named an American Institute of Certified Planners Fellow, one of the highest honors bestowed by the institute.

The honor recognizes a planner's achievements as an individual who has made significant contributions to planning and society.

PROFESSOR GETS FELLOWSHIP, GRANT

University of Hawai'i American Studies professor Robert Perkinson has received a fellowship from the Open Society Institute.

An accompanying grant will subsidize his writing of "Texas Tough: The Rise of a Prison Empire," a history of American punishment from slavery to the present with an emphasis on Texas, which has the highest incarceration rate in the nation.

IOLANI HEADMASTER TO CHAIR NAIS

Iolani School headmaster Val Iwashita has been elected chairman of the board of trustees for the National Association of Independent Schools. He is the first Hawai'i educator to head this national organization.

NAIS represents more than 1,300 independent schools and associations in the United States and abroad.

RELIGION SCHOOL HONORS ALUMNUS

The Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, Calif., has named Wallace Fukunaga a distinguished alumnus for 2006.
