1949: Gov. Stainback meets International Longshore and Warehouse Union leaders in an effort to settle the dock strike that started May 1.
1957: Color television comes to Hawai'i with the introduction of the Islands' fourth TV station, KHVH. Only about 50 color sets were available in Honolulu at the time. At times the color on the first broadcast faded a bit, The Advertiser reported, "but there is no doubt this medium is a success."
1993: A divided Hawai'i Supreme Court rules that the state law prohibiting marriages by gay couples is unconstitutional unless the state can show compelling reason to justify it.
1997: Gov. Ben Cayetano and Honolulu businesswoman Vicky Liu marry in a Washington Place ceremony.
2000: University of Hawai'i President Kenneth Mortimer announces he will resign effective July 1, 2001.
2000: Cumulina, the world's first cloned mouse, dies in her plastic cage in a University of Hawai'i lab, apparently as she slept. Cumulina was born on Oct. 3, 1997, in the cramped laboratory of Ryuzo Yanagimachi.
2003: Nurses at Wahiawa General Hospital go on strike.
