UH sweeps baseball doubleheader at Louisiana Tech

Advertiser Staff

Eli Christensen doubled home Matt Inouye from second with one out in the top of the ninth inning to break a 6-all game and lead Hawai'i over Louisiana Tech, 7-6, Saturday night to complete a doubleheader and four-game series sweep at J.C. Love Field in Ruston, La.

The Rainbows (37-12 overall, 14-6 WAC) won the opener, 5-3, in the three-hour rain-delayed first game. The Bulldogs (28-22, 9-12) squandered a 6-2 lead after five innings in losing for the ninth time in their last 10 games.

Matt Daly (6-0) pitched two scoreless innings of relief for UH. Starter Mark Rodrigues lasted just 3 1/3 innings, giving up five runs. Tyler Davis gave up a run in 3 2/3 innings of relief.

Andrew Alsup (3-1) was charged with two runs, four hits and a walk with one strikeout in 2 2/3 innings of relief for the Bulldogs.

Luis Avila smacked his seventh home run of the season, Robbie Wilder was 4 for 5 and Inouye was 3 for 5 with two doubles.

In the top of the ninth, Inouye legged out a double to left and took third when Esteban Lopez grounded out to second. With the infield drawn in, Christensen lofted a double to right near the foul line to score Inouye.

In the first game, Ian Harrington (6-3) allowed three runs, six hits with no walks and four strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings. Darrell Fisherbaugh allowed a single in 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for his ninth save.

Jericho Jones' two-run home run in the first inning put the Bulldogs (28-21, 9-11) ahead early. But the Rainbows scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings to take the lead, the go-ahead run coming a Derek DuPree sacrifice fly. Hawai'i added single runs in the sixth and ninth innings for insurance.
