Spurred by junior Samantha Cabreros' record-breaking performance, Punahou won its fourth straight Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls track and field championship last night at Kamehameha's Kunuiakea Stadium.

The Buffanblu scored 166 points to easily outdistance Kamehameha (120). Iolani took third with 83 points, followed by Pac-Five (53), Word of Life (28), Sacred Hearts (22) and Mid-Pacific (20).

Kamehameha won the boys title for the fourth straight time with 169 points, followed by Punahou (126 1/2), Damien (82 1/2), Iolani (48) and Word of Life (31).

Cabreros won the triple jump with a mark of 38 feet, 8 1/2 inches, breaking the record of 38-1 3/4 set by Our Redeemer's Maureen Dunn in 1988. Cabreros also won the long jump (18-1 3/4), ran the first leg of Punahou's winning 4x100 meter relay team and took second in the 200, in 28.24 seconds.

"She's been progressing nicely all season, and she's peaking at the right time," said Punahou coach Duncan Macdonald. "She was only three inches off the (triple jump) record in the trials, and that was after three jumps and running the 200. So we knew if she had even just a few more minutes of rest tonight, she had a good chance of breaking it."

The Buffanblu's Kim Culver won the 200 in 28.03 seconds, the 400 in 59.77 and anchored the winning 4x100 team.

Kamehameha's boys won the 4x100 relay and the Warriors' Kinohi Warrington won a closely contested race in the 100. He finished in 11.06 seconds, edging teammate Danson Cappo (11.14) and Damien's Kealoha Pilares (11.16). The top six runners in the event finished within two-tenths of a second of each other.

Warrington also won the 400, in 49.45.

Kamehameha's Alana Meditz set a record in the 300 hurdles with a hand-timed mark of 46.7. The electronic record time is 46.69, set by Punahou's Sara Yap in 1999. Teammate Charina Sumner tied the pole vault record of 10 feet, 6 inches set last year and tied in Wednesday's trials by Punahou's Anna Hildebrand.

Punahou's Michael Yee won the 300 hurdles in 40.83 seconds, after falling down in the trials and barely qualifying for the finals by finishing eighth.

Word of Life's Careena Onosai swept the shot put and discus events for the fourth straight year, winning the discus with a throw of 135 feet, 5 inches and the shot put with a mark of 37-4 1/2.

Pilares won the triple jump with a mark of 46-1, just two inches off the record set by Ronnie Jones in 1989.
