HOLOHOLO
Hawai'i films to screen in Big Apple

Advertiser Staff

The fourth annual "Pacifika: New York Hawaiian Film Festival" brings some aloha to Gotham, N.Y., May 19-21. Filmmakers Eddie and Myrna Kamae are among those who will screen movies, including three documentaries and 22 Pacific islander films, at the Cantor Film Center and the New York University Tisch Film & Television Theaters in downtown Manhattan.

Last year the opening and closing parties were a home away from home for New York-based Hawai'i people, with folks like Weldon Kekauoha and Manu Boyd performing and pupu catered by L&L — there are two of them in the city. ("What's that?" one festival-goer asked, pointing at a Spam musubi.) It's also a chance to see films and meet filmmakers from around the Pacific (the New Zealand entries are always strong).

The festival opens with the Kamaes' latest, "Keepers of the Flame: The Cultural Legacy of Three Hawaiian Women." A bio-pic about musician Steven Ma'i'i, directed by his son Kaliko Palmeira, will make its Mainland debut. Documentaries include "Duke Kahanamoku: Hawai'i's Soul" and "Eddie Aikau: Hawaiian Hero."

There will also be a block-printing workshop by artistauthor Caren Loebel-Fried ("Hawaiian Legends of the Guardian Spirits") at the American Indian Community House at 708 Broadway.

Tickets: $8-$10. Reservations and schedule information: (212) 966-3378, www.hawaiicultural foundation.org.
