University of Hawai'i freshman Justine Smethurst Monday was named the Western Athletic Conference's Pitcher of the Week for softball.

On Friday, Smethurst, of Melbourne, Australia, pitched a perfect game in a 6-0 victory over Utah State. It was Smethurst's second perfect game and the Rainbow Wahine's fourth this season. Smethurst, who struck out six, threw 94 pitches, 65 for strikes.

"I'm glad to see her win it," UH coach Bob Coolen said. "This bodes well for her."

Smethurst is expected to compete on an Australia select team that will play in international tournaments this summer. Coolen said Smethurst also is competing for a berth on the Australian team that will compete in the World Games.

Meanwhile, the Rainbows' immediate plans are to complete a suspended game against Nevada. Wednesday game will pick up in the top of the fifth inning, with UH trailing 2-1. The game will be played in Fresno, site of the WAC softball tournament. The six-team tournament, whose winner advances to the NCAA Regionals, begins Thursday.
