8 Hawai'i surfers advance in Brazil

Eight Hawai'i surfers advanced to the second round of the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships yesterday at Maresias Beach, Sao Paulo, Brazil.
The opening day of the contest was completed in 3- to 4-foot waves.
In the boys under-18 division, Hawai'i surfers went four-for-four in heat victories. Casey Brown, Torrey Meister, Kyle Ramey and Nathan Rex each won their respective heats to advance to the second round of the winners' bracket.
In the boys under-16 division, Dylan Melamed placed first in his heat, and Granger Larsen, Tyler Newton and Alex Smith each placed second. The top two from each heat advanced.
The contest is considered the world championship for surfers age 18 and younger. Hawai'i is one of 28 countries/regions in the competition.
Hawai'i, which is recognized as its own region for this event, is the defending team champion.
The girls under 18 division is expected to run today.

HAYASHI LEADS BY TWO STROKES AT KAPALUA
Defending champion Kevin Hayashi shot an opening-round 1-over-par 74 yesterday to take a two-shot lead in the Hawaiian Telcom Hall of Fame Championship at Kapalua Plantation Course.
John Freitas and Andrew Feldmann are tied for second, and Larry Stubblefield and David Ishii are tied for third at 77.
Ron Kiaaina Jr. (71) leads the senior division by two strokes and Larry Harris (82) is atop the super senior division by eight shots.
