Kono sets record; Moanalua wins team state golf title

Advertiser Staff

Punahou sophomore Stephanie Kono shattered the scoring record and Moanalua won its first David S. Ishii Foundation Girls State Golf Championship Wednesday at Turtle Bay's Fazio Course.

After shooting a course-record 64 Tuesday, Kono closed with an even-par 72 yesterday to win by seven shots over Moanalua freshman Kristina Merkle (72—143). Kaua'i High's Miki Ueoka had the only sub-par round, a 1-under 71, to take third at 147.

Kono's 136 was four better than the previous scoring record, set by Waiakea's Kira-Ann Murashige in 2003. Leilehua's Britney Choy, the 2004 champion, was fourth at 80—150.

Merkle's score, combined with Jaclyn Hilea's 76 and Iris Ocariza's 78, gave Moanalua a 226 total yesterday and a two-day score of 451. That was two better than Punahou. Maui took third at 487.
