Rainbow Wahine wins WAC heptathlon title

By Ann Miller

University of Hawai'i sophomore Annett Wichmann won the heptathlon today at the Western Athletic Conference outdoor track and field championships at Cooke Field.

Utah State's Lacey Hulbert led through the first five of the seven events. Wichmann then overtook her with a javelin throw of 141 feet, 3 inches.

Wichmann's throw was worth 726 points compared to Hulbert's 526 points for her throw of 105-2.

With Hulbert needing to beat Wichmann by two seconds in the final event — the 800-meter run — the Rainbow Wahine ran on the Utah State senior's shoulder until the final 110 meters when she ran by her and won the event in 2:23.01.

Wichmann's totalled 5,374 points, which should put her into the NCAA national in Sacramento, Calif., in June.

Hulbert's score of 5,304 also is far over the provisional standard required by the NCAA.

Rainbow Wahine Mallory Gilbert finished fifth with 4,376.
