UH wins two in first day of WAC softball tourney

Advertiser Staff

Alana Power's two-run double broke a 1-all tie in the top of the seventh and led the third-seeded University of Hawai'i to a 3-1 victory over No. 2 seed San Jose State Thursday in the second round of the Western Athletic Conference softball tournament in Fresno, Calif.

The Rainbow Wahine (30-20) will play Friday against the winner of a losers-bracket game.

UH first baseman Tyleen Tausaga slammed a bases-empty homer to lead off the seventh and tie it at 1.

Outfielder Kaulana Gould hit a one-out single and, one out later, advanced to third on Kate Robinson's single. Robinson moved to second on the play on left-fielder Mandy Winkle's error. Gould and Robinson scored on Power's double.

In the opening round game on Thursday, Justine Smethurst pitched a five-inning perfect game — her third perfect game of the season — and struck out 11 to lift the Rainbow Wahine to an 8-0 victory over Louisiana Tech.

Smethurst (15-10) faced the minimum 15 batters and no hit ball went past the infield. The game ended after five innings because of the tournament's eight-run differential rule.

Kristi Yoshizawa and Robinson each had two hits for UH, which had 11 hits. Brandi Peiler had an RBI double and RBI sacrifice fly.
