HPU, UH-Hilo ousted in softball regional

Seattle University's Jane Purdy hit a two-run homer in the top of the eighth inning to defeat Hawai'i-Hilo, 11-9, Friday and eliminate the Vulcans from the NCAA Division II West Regional softball tournament in Bakersfield, Calif.

Earlier, Cal State Stanislaus, fueled by a six-run first inning, ousted Hawai'i Pacific, 10-2. The game was called after six innings because of an eight-run rule.

UH-Hilo finished 29-19. HPU finished 27-20.

The Sea Warriors were outhit 13-5, but left the bases loaded twice, and stranded nine runners in the game.

HPU's Kara Wedemeyer batted 2 for 3, and finished 5 for 7 in the tournament. Pitcher Courtney Kessell took the loss, falling to 13-7 in her freshman season. 

"It's unfortunate the season had to end this way," said Wedemeyer.  "The experience was good for our young team, and hopefully we'll learn from this and get back to the tournament next year."

In the Vulcans' defeat, Leo Sing Chow was 4 for 4 with three RBIs. Mika Asamura was 3 for 5.

The Vulcans out-hit Seattle, 21-13.
