Is Hawai'i under surveillance?

Hawaiian Telcom refused to say whether it has shared calling information with the National Security Agency.

"First and foremost, our duty is to protect our customers' records and their privacy while keeping in full compliance with legal requests," said Hawaiian Telcom spokeswoman Ann Nishida.

Hawaiian Telcom took over local landline telephone service from Verizon in May 2005 and broke all ties with Verizon last month. USA Today has quoted sources as saying Verizon is one of the phone companies that shared calling records with the NSA.
