Buddhist group holds Gathering

The Shin Buddhist Project of Wahiawa Hongwanji Mission will have its Gathering 2006 conference 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 17 at the Renaissance Ilikai Waikiki Hotel.

It will focus on interpersonal relationships from the perspective of Shin Buddhism. Speakers include Wendy Miyake, author of "Beads, Boys, and the Buddha," and Dan Hamamura, director of the short film "Three Little Words." There will also be workshops on "Young Love," to "A Mother's Perspective," "Business, the Buddha, and You," "Romantic Conversation," "Moving Beyond Conflict," and "RSVP: Invitation to the Dance."

Registration deadline is May 31. Cost is $65 fee.

LANTERNS FLOATED ON MEMORIAL DAY

Na Lei Aloha Foundation and Shinnyo-En Hawaii will stage its free, eighth annual lantern-floating event at 6 p.m Memorial Day on Magic Island at Ala Moana Beach Park.

Jake Shimabukuro, Nalani Olds, Kanilau, the Royal Hawaiian Band, Island Youth by Palama Settlement, Himig Indak Filipino and Ryukyukoku Matsuri Daiko Hawaii will provide entertainment. Canoes, provided by various canoe clubs, will transport lanterns, set afloat to guide the souls of the dead.

Free parking will be available at the Hawaii Convention Center. Beginning at 4 p.m., shuttle service will be provided from the Hawaii Convention Center and the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Hotel.
