When the clipper bark D.C. Murray arrived at Honolulu Harbor in May 1865, it brought news of the assassination of President Lincoln, who died April 15. The news was published in the May 13, 1865, Pacific Commercial Advertiser.

1908: Congress approves $3.1 million for a naval station at Pearl Harbor.

1929: James Arthur Rath, organizer of Palama Settlement and its director for more than 20 years, dies at the age of 58.

1908: The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports on Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana'ole's, first speech to Congress.

1921: C. Brewer & Co. purchases a lot at the corner of King and Richards streets for a new office building.

1924: Halema'uma'u erupts violently, spewing rocks and lava 1,800 feet into the air. Eight people are injured.

1926: Catholic Bishop Libert Boeynaems dies at the age of 68. He had been in Hawai'i since 1881 and had headed the Catholic Church in Hawai'i since 1903.

1940: Torrential rains on the northeast side of Kaua'i wash out six homes and a number of chicken coops, disrupt traffic and leave the Nawiliwili valley under floodwaters.

1981: Pope John Paul II is shot and seriously wounded in a close-range assassination attempt in St. Peter's Square.
