Sailor continues solo trip around the world

Advertiser Staff

British sailor Adrian Flanagan is expected to leave the Waikiki Yacht Club around noon today to continue his solo polar circumnavigation of the world, according to Bobby Jennings, a yacht club spokeswoman.

Flanagan, 45, arrived in Honolulu on May 8 for structural repairs to his boat after spending nearly 6 1/2 months at sea.

Following welding work done to his ship's mast, electrical problems were discovered on board forcing Flanagan to prolong his stay in Hawaii.

After leaving Hawai'i, he would need to go through the Bering Strait by July 15 to be on schedule to complete his around the world trip. Flanagan has already completed about 60 percent of the trip.

If his trip is successful, he would become the first person to circumnavigate the world vertically.
