Movie openings

Advertiser News Services

  • "The Da Vinci Code": Dan Brown's novel is utterly preposterous; Ron Howard's movie is preposterously entertaining. The plot is so convoluted it's a miracle the code is ever broken, but Howard evokes mood and mystery that weaves a spell. Howard is a better filmmaker than Brown is a novelist, and he follows Brown's formula (exotic location, startling revelation, desperate chase scene, repeat as needed) and elevates it into a superior entertainment. Opens tomorrow at Dole Cannery 18 Theatres, Ward Stadium 16, Koko Marina 8-Plex, Pearl Highlands 12, Pearlridge West 16-Plex, Kapolei 16-Plex, Mililani 14-Plex, Ko'olau 10-Plex, Windward Stadium 10, La'ie Cinemas, Prince Kuhio Stadium Cinemas (Big Island), Makalapua Cinemas (Big Island), Maunaloa Town Cinemas (Moloka'i), Maui Mall Megaplex Cinemas (Maui), Kukui Mall 4-Plex (Maui), Lahaina Wharf Cinemas (Maui), Coconut Marketplace Cinemas (Kaua'i). (PG-13)

  • "Don't Come Knocking": Sam Shepard plays a has-been cowboy star who walks off the set of a B Western and seeks his past. Beautifully photographed, with some scenes that don't even pretend to work, and others that have an unexpected sweetness. Opens tomorrow at Varsity Twin. (R)

  • "Over the Hedge": The forest animals awaken to find that half their world is replaced by a new suburb behind a giant hedge. When Vince the bear (voice by Nick Nolte) discovers his food stash has been stolen, RJ the raccoon (Bruce Willis) is given a deadline to replace it, and he mobilizes skunks, squirrels and other critters in an assault on suburbia. Has a little of the same philosophical dialogue as the comic strip, a nice visual look and a good sense of humor. More fun for kids, but parents won't have a bad time. With Garry Shandling, Steve Carell, Wanda Sykes, Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara and Thomas Haden Church as a pest-control expert known as The Verminator. Opens tomorrow at Dole Cannery, Ward, Koko Marina, Pearl Highlands, Pearlridge West, Kapolei, Mililani, Ko'olau 10-Plex, Windward, Maunaloa, Maui Mall, Kukui Mall, Prince Kuhio, Makalapua, Front Street Theatres (Maui). (PG)

  • "See No Evil": With a cop, eight small-time crooks enter a forsaken hotel to do community service and encounter a 7-foot, 400-pound reclusive psychopath with fingernails like razors and a rusty steel plate screwed into his head. With Kane, Christina Vidal, Michael J. Pagan and Samantha Noble. Opens tomorrow at Dole Cannery, Ward, Pearl Highlands, Pearlridge West, Ko'olau 10-Plex, Windward. (R)
