Yamase will head Big Island athletics

Advertiser Staff

Waiakea High athletic director Ken Yamase will become Big Island Interscholastic Federation executive director on June 1.

Yamase, 56, succeeds Keith Morioka, who retired last year. Former BIIF executive secretary Roy Fujimoto came out of retirement to serve during the interim.

Yamase has been athletic director at Waiakea since 1989. He also coached baseball at the school, as well as assisted in girls basketball.

"It presents a different set of challenge," Yamase said of his new job. "It means shifting gears from focusing on your own school to the entire league and what's best for the state."

Assistant ADs Tom Correa and Donn Yamamoto will serve in the interim at Waiakea until a permanent successor is named. Yamase said his last day as AD is May 31.
