UH tops San Jose State, 6-0, in baseball

Advertiser Staff

Justin Costi pitched a six-hitter and Eli Christensen drove in two runs to lead No. 29 Hawai'i over San Jose State, 6-0, Saturday in Western Athletic Conference baseball at Municipal Stadium in San Jose, Calif.

The Rainbows improved to 39-13 overall and 16-6 in the WAC, while the Spartans dropped to 33-23 and 12-11.

Costi (8-1) saved his shutout with two inning-ending double plays in the game, including one in the bottom of the ninth for his second complete game of the season. He walked one and struck out four.

Spartans' starter Branden Dewing allowed four runs, three earned, 11 hits and no walks with five strikeouts in five innings.

Christensen had a second-inning RBI single to give UH a 1-0 lead and a seventh-inning sacrifice fly that make it 6-0. He also grounded into a double play that scored a run in the fifth, but that does not count as an RBI.

The series concludes at 10 a.m. Sunday.

Hawai'i will be either the first or second seed of the six-team WAC tournament that starts Thursday at Fresno State. Because of predetermined scheduling, UH will play the first game on Thursday slated for 8 a.m., Hawai'i time. The Rainbows play either sixth-seeded Sacramento State for fifth-seeded Louisiana Tech.
