A 44-year-old Wai'anae-area man was killed early this morning when he was hit by a pickup truck while riding his bicycle on Farrington Highway near Akowai Road in Nanakuli.

Police said the bicyclist was traveling toward Wai'anae in the shoulder lane of the highway when he was struck from behind about 1:20 a.m. by a dark colored pickup that swerved into the shoulder lane.

The truck driver did not stop after the collision, police said. The cyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are asking anyone who may have information about the incident to called the Traffic Investigation Division at 529-3499.

Speeding appeared to be a contributing factor in the collision but it is unknown if drug or alcohol use played a part in the crash.

This morning's traffic fatality was the 42nd of the year on O'ahu compared with 31 during the same period last year.
