Police Beat: Bus driver helps thwart purse theft

A city bus driver and police saved a Hawai'i vacation from turning sour for a tourist from Europe yesterday.

Police said the 55-year-old woman was riding a city bus along the North Shore about 11 a.m. when a male bus rider, estimated to be in his 30s, allegedly reached under the woman's seat, took her purse and got off the bus when it came to a stop.

The woman notified the bus driver who, in turn, notified authorities.

Patrol officers from the Windward police district responded to the scene, located a suspect a short time later and arrested him on suspicion of second-degree robbery.

All of the woman's valuables were recovered, police said.

Moped owner interrupts alleged would-be thief

A 41-year-old Kaimuki man sustained an arm injury last night while trying to stop the alleged theft of his moped, police said.

The moped owner, who had secured the vehicle to a bike rack next to a public street, happened upon an unknown man using a bolt cutter in an attempt to remove it from the rack. When the owner intervened, the would-be thief reportedly struck the owner's arm with the bolt cutter.

The would-be thief then ran away without the moped, and the owner declined medical treatment at the scene, police said.

The incident has been classified as a first-degree robbery.

Joy-riding leads to arrest for suspected car theft

Police arrested a 20-year-old man early yesterday morning on suspicion of car theft after a patrol officer saw the man spinning the car in circles in the middle of a public road in Wai'anae.

The officer was preparing to issue the driver a traffic ticket when he learned that a 20 year-old woman had reported the car stolen from the Pearlridge Shopping Center on Saturday.

The officer then arrested the driver on suspicion of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle.

Woman reports sexual assault incident

Police opened a sex assault and kidnapping investigation yesterday morning after a a 25-year-old woman told them she was sexually assaulted by a man who appeared to be between 20 and 25 years old.

The woman said she met the man in a night club and went with him to his car where she was assaulted about 3:50 a.m.
