Former UH lineman killed in crash

Former University of Hawai'i football player Andy Phillips died Sunday evening in an automobile accident near Albuquerque, N.M., UH officials announced yesterday.

"He was just a great, wonderful guy," said Mike Cavanaugh, a former UH coach now with Oregon State who was Phillips' coach at UH.

Phillips, 28, and Spencer Clark, 19, a successful driver on the NASCAR Autozone West Series Circuit, died in the crash.

Phillips was a crew member for Clark's Allegiant Air Racing team.

Phillips was the Warriors' starting offensive left guard in 1999, June Jones' first season as UH head coach. That team won nine games, including an upset of Oregon State in the O'ahu Bowl. The previous season, the Warriors were 0-12.
