Woman arrested in fatal Nanakuli hit-run

By Curtis Lum
Advertiser Staff Writer

A 20-year-old woman was arrested yesterday in connection with a hit-and-run accident that killed a man early yesterday morning in Nanakuli.

The woman was arrested in Nanakuli at 7:05 a.m. and booked at the Kapolei police substation for failure to render aid. She was released without being charged pending further investigation.

The accident occurred at about 1:20 a.m. on Farrington Highway west of Akowai Road. Police said a 44-year-old Wai'anae man was riding a bicycle in the shoulder lane when a vehicle swerved and struck him from behind.

The impact threw the man to a grassy area, and he died at the scene. The driver of the vehicle, which police said was a dark-colored pickup truck, drove away.

Police said speed may have been a factor in the crash, but it was not known yesterday if alcohol or drugs were factors. The bicyclist was not wearing a helmet.

The man's identity had not been released by the city medical examiner's office yesterday.

His death was the 42nd so far this year compared with 31 at the same time last year.

Police are asking any witnesses to call officer Lisa Reed of the traffic investigation division at 529-3499.
