Andy Irons of Kaua'i advanced to the fourth round of the Globe WCT Fiji men's surfing contest yesterday.

The third round was completed in 3- to 5-foot waves at Cloudbreak, Tavarua, Fiji.

Irons defeated wildcard entry Peter Mendia of Florida, 15.5-10.67. Irons' first wave of the heat received a score of 8.5 to give him a lead he would not relinquish.

He is the only Hawai'i surfer remaining in the contest.

His younger brother Bruce Irons and Fred Patacchia Jr. of O'ahu's North Shore were eliminated in the third round.

The contest is the fourth stop on the 2006 World Championship Tour.
