In a May 25, 1898, letter to the editor, Robert Wilcox takes issue with some of the genealogies in a book by Queen Lili'uokalani.

1898: Theo. H. Davies dies in England.

1930: The Lassco liner City of Honolulu burns in Honolulu Harbor. Thirteen are injured. The cargo on the burning ship included 400 tons of potash, 400 tons of sugar and 17,000 barrels of oil.

1935: A total of 225 planes from the aircraft carriers Saratoga, Lexington and Ranger make a mass flight over Honolulu. It was part of fleet maneuvers off Hawai'i and was described in The Advertiser as the mightiest formation flight ever seen in Hawai'i.

1940: Honolulu firefighters are knitting sweaters, socks and mittens for soldiers on the European front, The Advertiser reports.

1946: The War Shipping Administration returns the SS Lurline to Matson Navigation Co. The Lurline had been
a troopship for 4 1/2 years.

1967: Mayor Neal Blaisdell announces federal approval of the $100 million "Waikiki Jungle" redevelopment project.

1968: The University of Hawai'i Board of Regents refuses to review its decision to deny tenure to professor Oliver Lee.

1979: Nine Hawai'i residents, including Walter Yamashiro, head of the state Office of Consumer Protection, and the Very Rev. Albert Leunens, head of the Sacred Hearts Fathers and Brothers in Hawai'i, are killed in an American Airlines DC-10 crash in Chicago.

1999: Fiamalu Penitani of Wai'anae, whose ring name was Musashimaru, is promoted to yokozuna, sumo's highest rank.
