A 20-year-old Kane'ohe man was killed early this morning when he lost control of the motorcycle he was riding on the Pali Highway.

Police said the man was riding a 2004 Suzuki motorcycle toward Kailua and was entering the hairpin turn on the Kailua side of the Pali tunnels when his motor veered onto the right shoulder and struck a concrete barrier about 12:35 a.m. ejecting the rider.

His body came to a rest in a drainage culvert next to the side barrier. The motorcycle operator was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the weather was clear and the highway surface was dry at the time of the incident. The motorcyclist was wearing a helmet. Police said it is likely that speeding was a factor in the case.

it was not immediately known if alcohol or drugs played a part in the crash.

There have been 43 traffic fatalities on O'ahu so far this year, compared with 31 during the same period last year.
