Dispute leaves 1 dead, 1 injured

HILO, Hawai'i — An argument on the Big Island led to the death of a 45-year-old man and serious injury to a 39-year-old woman.

Police have not released their names or their connection to each other, but said the man shot himself in the head Thursday after ramming his car into the woman's vehicle at about 6:10 p.m. on Volcano Highway near the Lehuanani Subdivision in Glenwood.

Witnesses told police that both motorists had stopped on the Volcano-bound shoulder of the road and were arguing when the woman attempted to drive off in the Kea'au direction. The man crashed his car into her vehicle to prevent her from leaving and then got out of his car and shot himself, police were told.

The woman, who was injured in the crash, was taken to Hilo Medical Center and later flown to The Queen's Medical Center, where she was last reported in serious condition.

Police are asking anyone with information on the incident to contact Detective Lucille Melemai at (808) 961-2377, the police nonemergency number at (808) 935-3311, or CrimeStoppers at (808) 961-8300 in Hilo or (808) 329-8181 in Kona.
