1909: The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports that Demosthenes Lycurgus has purchased the Hilo Hotel and will reopen it as a first-class inn.
1918: The territorial legislature approves a Waikiki reclamation project to build a canal and drain the Waikiki swamps.
1922: Eruptions are reported at the Makaopuhi and Napau craters.
1958: Sugar workers return to work in cane fields neglected for 118 days as the industry and the ILWU take the first big step in breaking the costly sugar strike
1958: The submarine Stickleback is rammed by the destroyer escort Silverstein and sinks in waters 2 miles deep 19 miles southwest of Pearl Harbor. There were no casualties. The 74 men and eight officers were picked up by the submarine rescue ship Greenlet and a crash boat.
1967: Japanese Crown Prince Akihito and Princess Michiko arrive in Hawai'i on their third trip here since they were married in 1959.
1977: Two former University of Hawai'i Institute of Marine Biology employees release two dolphins, Kea and Puka, from the marine lab. The two said they did it because they said humans had no right to hold the mammals captive.
