Two killed in Kaua'i crash

Advertiser Staff

Two men died Tuesday in a head-on collision on Kapa'a bypass road, about a mile from Kuhi'o Highway junction.

Both victims of the 4:30 p.m. accident were in an Acura sedan that police said crossed the centerline and collided with a Honda van. The car's driver, 21, was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, 27, died at Wilcox Hospital. Both men were from Kapa'a.

Police are not releasing names of the victims until next of kin are notified.

A woman driver of the van was taken to Wilcox Hospital with unknown injuries. Her 2-year-old passenger was treated at the hospital and later released.

The deaths increased Kaua'i's traffic fatality count for the year to eight. As of yesterday, 73 people have died on Hawai'i's roadways in 2006: 45 on O'ahu, 14 on the Big Island, eight on Kaua'i and six on Maui.
