Stay off the roads, Honolulu mayor urges

Advertiser Staff

Mayor Mufi Hannemann is asking drivers to stay put if they don't have to use O'ahu roads congested with landslide-related problems.

"We want people to stay off the road except for those who have to be on the road," he said. "And exercise patience. Drive with aloha and exercise a lot of caution."

Hannemann went to the city's Traffic Management Center this afternoon to observe the road conditions first hand.

He said city buses that normally use the Pali Highway will be diverted to the Likelike Highway to reach their normal stops. Affected routes include 55, 56, 57 and 65.

"They will be taking some detours and there will be some delays, but they will be able to get people home," he said.

It is not certain how soon the Pali will re-open and commuters who need to use it tomorrow should expect 30 minute delays if it still closed, Hannemann said.
