'Tension sleeve' caused Tuesday night's power failure

Advertiser Staff

Hawaiian Electric Co. today determined that a "tension sleeve" failed causing Tuesday's night's power outage that affected 2,900 customers in Waipahu, Waikele and Pearl City.

Heco spokesman Jose Dizon said a tension sleeve, used to connect lines, failed causing two 12-kilovolt transmission lines to fall in Waipahu near the city's district park at about 5 p.m.

Power was restored within 45 minutes to Waikele and Pearl City but not in Waipahu until shortly before 10 p.m.
