Mayor shortens workday for city workers

Advertiser Staff

City employees were allowed to leave early today because of the heavy rain and traffic problems, Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann said in a written statement. The mayor told department heads at 2:30 p.m. that they could dismiss non-essential employees. The decision would "allow those employees to attend to their affairs while softening the crush of pau hana traffic later this afternoon." He asked residents in low-lying flood prone areas to be alert for weather-related emergencies.
