The National Weather Service said the Hanalei River was rising toward flood stage as rain poured down at 3 to 4 inches per hour over Mt. Wai'ale'ale late this morning.

The weather service issued a flash flood warning for the island that remains in effect until 2:15 p.m. today.

Earlier, the agency said conditions were so unstable that it could also issue a tornado watch, but no tornado advisory had been put in effect by 11:40 a.m.

The flash flood warning was for the entire eastern side of the island. from Wainiha, through Kapa'a and south to Koloa and Po'ipu.

"Excessive runoff from thsi storm will cause flash flooding of streams and could also trigger rock slides and mudslides in steep terrain," the weather service said in its advisory.
