Civil Defense test complicated by phone circuit glitch

The phone circuit that transmits the monthly warning test from state Civil Defense to Hawai'i radio and television stations malfunctioned today, leaving broadcasters to rely on a backup system."This is the 11:45 (a.m.), first workday of the month test," said Ray Lovell, spokesman for state Civil Defense. "I don't know why the phone circuit went out. It was working this morning."
State officials started getting calls from radio and television stations this morning saying the line appeared to be dead. State officials told the broadcasters to monitor KSSK and pick up the signal on a backup line, Lovell said.
"It's working but the audio quality sounds more like it's coming over a telephone," Lovell said. "The system still works."
