Big Island man arrested in woman's slaying

HILO, Hawai'i — Big Island police today arrested a 23-year-old Hawaiian Beaches man on suspicion of murder in the death of a woman he knew in the Pana'ewa rainforest area outside of Hilo.

Police Lt. Randall Medeiros said family members reported the 20-year-old woman missing Wednesday, and police began interviewing people about the woman's whereabouts. The woman has not yet been positively identified, and police were withholding her name. An autopsy was scheduled for tomorrow.

One of the people detectives contacted was the suspect, who voluntarily came to the police station, Medeiros said. After interviewing the man, police arrested him on suspicion of allegedly violating a restraining order.

A statement issued by the police department yesterday said that "the alleged killing was reported to have occurred Wednesday afternoon."

Detectives located the woman's body, and the suspect was arrested in connection with the apparent murder just before 4 p.m. today.

The suspect was being held at the Hilo police cellblock last night while detectives assigned to the Criminal Investigation Section continue the investigation, police said.
