Nasty weather forces marine advisory for boaters

The National Weather Service has issued a marine advisory alerting boaters to heavy weather conditions, including the possbility of lightninght strikes, in ocean waters south of O'ahu and near Molokai.

The storms are expected to continue through the early afternoon, according to the advisory, which was issued at 10:06 a.m. today.

The showers and thunderstorms are moving east at about 11 mph and will produce gusty winds of up to 27 mph and limit visibility to about 2 miles in areas hit by the heavy showers.

The Weather Service is also advising mariners in the affected areas to be aware of possible lighting strikes within the stronger storms.

Boaters should seek safe harbor until the storms pass through. Those caught in open waters should stay below deck and away from ungrounded metal objects, the Weather Service said.

Hawaii Kai residents report heavy rains are pelting the area at about 10:45 a.m. this morning.
