7 a.m. traffic: Zipper Lane near H1/H2 merge closed

Advertiser Staff

The drive into town via the contra-flow lanes on the Pali highway is going well this morning, but the bigger problem is in Waipahu, where a portion of the Zipper Lane, between the Waikele off-ramp and the H-1/H-2 Freeway merge, has been shutdown.

An accident earlier this morning resulted in one or more concrete, zipper wall segments being pushed out into the west-bound lanes of the freeway.

Motorists heading down the H-2 Freeway can still use the Zipper Lane because the stretch affected by the protruding segments is west of the H-1/H-2 merge.

The Zipper Lane problem, however, is adding to the congestion in the remaining town-bound lanes of the H-1 Freeway along the Waipahu-Pearl City-'Aiea corridor.

Scott Ishikawa, state Department of Transportation spokesman, said DOT officials are hoping the Zipper Machine can be used to put the protruding segments back into place.
