Donation to rehab hospital helps heavier, taller patients

The Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific will now be able to buy bariatric bed systems to support heavier and taller patients, thanks to a recent donation.

Friends of Hawaii Charities, the event host of the Sony Open in Hawaii, has given $5,000 to support the hospital's inpatient rehabilitation program, allowing accessibility to efficient services for severely overweight patients.

These patients, who weight 350 to 500 pounds or are six feet or taller, require special services.

"This total bed care system allows accessibility," said Melanie Ocol, a registered nurse, in a press release. "It also gives patients a better sleep in a wider, longer bed, and assists the therapists and nursing staff with getting the patients out of bed as it places the patient in a full sitting position with the foot of the bed touching the ground."

Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific is the only acute care medical rehabilitation organization serving both Hawai'i and the Pacific.

Each year, the organization treats nearly 8,000 patients recovering from strokes, brain injury, spinal cord injury, orthopedic injuries, sports injuries and those individuals requiring general rehabilitation.
