DOT: Contra-flowing Pali going off 'without a hitch'

"We need to tell people to slow down," said Ishikawa, who was at Castle Junction near the Pali Golf Course at 6 a.m., monitoring the traffic flow into town.
"People are just ripping through here and the last thing we need right now is an accident, so please ask everybody to slow down."
A landslide yesterday morning just outside of and on the Honolulu side of the Pali Tunnels resulted in the highway being shutdown in both directions for most of the late morning and early afternoon hours.
Debris was cleared from the Kailua-bound lanes in time for the end-of-work commute back to Kailua.
Crews cleared away the remaining debris from the town-bound lanes overnight, but they will remain closed until officials have a chance to examine the area where the slide occur to check on its stability, Ishikawa said.
"It's Mother Nature's call as to how soon we will able to get up there," Ishikawa said.
Current plans call for traffic in both directions on the Pali to be halted at noon today and for the highway to be opened in the Kailua-bound direction only at about 1 p.m.
He could not say how soon the highway might be reopened in both directions.
Meanwhile, the contra-flow operation did not appear to be causing any
significant increase on the Likelike Highway or the H-3 Freeway, the two other trans-Ko'olau routes, Ishikawa said.
