Rains cancel Maui supply drop

Advertiser Staff

WAILUKU, Maui — Bad weather forced postponement of today's scheduled Army Air National Guard supply drop to Kipahulu and Kaupo residents affected by the closure of earthquake-damaged Paihi Bridge.

Mayor Alan Arakawa said the drop will be rescheduled as soon as weather conditions permit. He said the first Chinook cargo helicopter drop will include four 55-gallon drums of gasoline, 54 containers of propane, 52 5-gallon jugs of water, two generators and food.

An estimated 500 residents are affected by the closure, which cut off travel to Hana. Traffic on Piilani Highway on the other side of Kipahulu is limited due to unstable terrain on the mountainside that could lead to a landslide or falling boulders.
