Big Matt is gone, but Little Matt is back, so the nickname game will continue for the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team.

This season, there will be a Matt Gibson and a Matt Lojeski. There's a Todd Follmer and a Todd Lowenthal.

The head coach is Riley Wallace, and one of the top recruits is Riley Luettgerodt. There's also associate coach Bob Nash, and his son, junior guard/forward Bobby Nash.

Another associate coach is named Jackson Wheeler, and there's a freshman guard named Marquez Jackson.

Confused?

"We don't even use the first names for some guys," said Lojeski, a senior guard. "We just go by the nicknames for some of the guys."

At their annual "media day" yesterday at the Stan Sheriff Center, the Rainbow Warriors revealed their nicknames. Some of the nicknames are self-explanatory, while others come with a story.

In alphabetical order:

  • Jared Dillinger: "J.D." because of his initials. Sometimes called "Dill" as well.

  • Todd Follmer: He is 7 feet tall, so "Big Todd" would seem logical. However, his more popular nickname is "Roosta" because his hair stuck straight up like a rooster's red comb when he first came to Hawai'i in August.

  • Matt Gibson: "Little Matt" said he even uses that nickname on his myspace.com site. He also signs autographs as "Lil Matt Gibson."

But associate coach Wheeler said Gibson has a new nickname this season — "Psycho."

When asked why, Wheeler said simply, "look at him."

  • Ahmet Gueye: "Ahmet." OK, so he's the only player on the team without a nickname. He also happens to be 6 feet 8, 240 pounds and can bench-press 315 pounds.

"Nobody messes with Ahmet," Lojeski said.

  • Marquez Jackson: "Q," which is short for Quez.

Marquez is actually his middle name, and teammates often tease him about his real first name. Jackson said his first name is "embarrassing" and did not want it revealed.

  • Matt Lojeski: "Lojo," which is a play off his last name. It has practically become his only name.

"Nobody calls me Matt anymore," he said.

  • Todd Lowenthal: He was supposed to be the "Little Todd" to Follmer's "Big Todd."

But he bears a striking resemblance to television actor Ben Savage, so teammates now refer to Lowenthal as "Cory Matthews," who was Savage's character on the show Boy Meets World.

"I've been hearing that I really look like that guy ever since I started high school," Lowenthal said. "It's going to follow me around for a while, I think."

  • Riley Luettgerodt: "Loot," which is a play off his last name. Could chants of "Looooot" be coming this season in the Stan Sheriff Center if Luettgerodt scores for the 'Bows the way he did in junior college (26.7 points per game last season at Chemeketa Community College in Oregon)?

  • Jack Miller: "Nipples" because of an unfortunate incident in practice last season.

He said he forgot to wear an undershirt, so his jersey was irritating his skin. He kept rubbing his chest area, prompting one of the coaches to ask him what was wrong.

"I said my nipples were hurting," Miller said. "Everybody started laughing and calling me 'Nipples' after that."

  • Bobby Nash: "B-Nasty" is a play off his name, but it also describes his style of play, especially during physical drills with teammates in practice.

  • P.J. Owsley: "Heavy" because he weighs 240 pounds, and not all of it is muscle.

"On my (recruiting) trip here, I weighed 215," he said. "So compared to my old self, I'm a lot heavier."

  • Alex Veit: "Smooch" because that's the nickname his mother gave him.

"There's no story behind it," he said. "She called me 'Smooch' one day and it stuck."

Teammates insist there is another story behind the nickname, but Veit refused to give in.

  • Stephen Verwers: "Bam Bam" because of his strong play in the low post.

"That's one of the better (nicknames) because it fits," Lojeski said. "Every time he dunks, he just about tears down the rim."

  • Dominic Waters: "Cookies" because that's what he always yells when he gets a steal during practice.

  • John Wilder: "John Boy," which is a play off his name.

In any case, the 'Bows said some of the nicknames could change during the season, and that's a good thing.

"You have to be friends to call each other names," Owsley said.

Verwers added: "We're all close off the court, so we can have fun with stuff like that. Hopefully, it will transfer on the court and make us a better team."

The coaches apparently do not have any nicknames. At least none the players were willing to reveal.

"I think we're too afraid to call them anything but Coach," Gibson said.
