Water spout near Maui capped yesterday's wet weather

The water spout found its way over Maalaea Bay yesterday.

Yesterday's stormy weather spawned a water spout off South Maui shortly after noon.

These photos were taken by Chad Kruzic from the Pacific Whale Foundation's office at Ma'alaea Harbor.

Waterspouts and other types of tornadoes have a similar basic structure with air moving upward from the surface, where winds are rushing faster and faster as they swirl into the vortex and then upward. Water spouts are weaker than land-based tornadoes but can still pose a threat to boaters.
