Estimate revised on Sand Island wastewater spill

Advertiser Staff

Yesterday's spill at the Sand Island Wastewater Treatment Plan was smaller than initially suspected, the Environmental Services Department announced today.

About 64,000 gallons of partially treated wastewater spilled, rather than the 330,000 gallons reported yesterday because of a calculation error.

A city investigation into the spill indicates heavy rains and construction were both occurring when the wastewater overflowed between 11:45 a.m. and 1 p.m. yesterday, but the cause has not yet been determined.

Some of the spilled wastewater drained into Honolulu Harbor, so the public is advised to avoid the affected area.
