The Nov. 3, 1887, Pacific Commercial Advertiser reported that artist Jules Tavernier was planning to go to Europe. The French-born Tavernier died in Honolulu in May 1889 and was known for his volcano paintings. He is buried at Oahu Cemetery.

1907: The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports that the "Missionary House," the first frame building erected in Honolulu, is open to visitors.

1918: The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports the Island of Hawai'i was shaken from Hilo to Kohala by an earthquake of unusual sharpness the previous Friday night and there were wide cracks seen across the floor of Kilauea crater.

1922: Gov. Wallace R. Farrington, by special dispensation acting grand master of the Masonic Grand Lodge of California, officiates at the laying of the cornerstone of the Scottish Rite Cathedral at Wilder and Kewalo streets.

1945: A Consairways passenger plane operated by the Air Transport Command ditches at sea 450 miles east of Hickam Field, 18 are killed.

2000: Probate Judge Kevin Chang names Nainoa Thompson, Robert Kihune, Constance Lau, Douglas Ing and Diane Plotts to run the $6 billion estate of the late Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop. They replaced Lokelani Lindsey, Henry Peters, Gerard Jervis and Richard Wong, who were removed, and Oswald Stender, who resigned.

2002: The Hawai'i State Art Museum opens.
