UH men whip UH-Hilo in exhibition basketball

The University of Hawaii-Manoa men's basketball team exhibited dominance in an 83-50 victory over Hawaii-Hilo in an exhibition game Saturday night.

A crowd of 3,012 at the Stan Sheriff Center watched the Rainbow Warriors dominate from start to finish over the NCAA Division II Vulcans.

Matt Lojeski scored 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting, P.J. Owsley contributed 10 points and seven rebounds, and Matt Gibson added 10 points, six assists and five rebounds to lead a balanced Hawaii offense. All 15 'Bows in uniform got in the game, and 13 of them scored.

Michael Martin led the Vulcans with 13 points, and Rashad Bilal added 11. Kalaheo High alum Sam Wilhoite contributed 12 points and eight rebounds.

The 'Bows took control early and never let up. Bobby Nash grabbed the opening tip and then raced to the basket for a 2-0 lead. On the next Hawai'i possession, Stephen Verwers threw down a powerful dunk. Less than four minutes into the game, the 'Bows had a 10-0 lead.

The lead increased to 17-2, then 29-6 with 7:03 still remaining in the first half. Lojeski had 11 points before halftime, and Nash and Riley Luettgerodt scored seven each.

The 'Bows took a 42-19 lead at intermission, and all 13 scholarship players got playing time before the first half ended.

Hawaii scored the first seven points of the second half to increase the lead to 49-19.
