Head-on collision claims life of 25-year-old man

Advertiser Staff

One man is dead and another in critical condition following a late-night, three-car accident in Wai`anae, police said this morning.

A 25-year-old driver of one car was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident after his 1998 Honda Accord, heading westbound, swerved across Farrington Highway and struck two other vehicles in the east-bound lanes, police said.

The Accord first struck a 1982 pickup truck, knocking off its rear tire. Then it continued in the east-bound lanes and ran head-on into a 1987 multipurpose vehicle driven by a 53-year-old Wai`anae woman.

The woman was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in serious condition. A 55-year-old male passenger in her car was reported in critical condition at Queen's this morning.

The 16-year-old driver of the pickup truck was not injured, police said.

The accident occurred just before 10 p.m. yesterday under conditions that police said involved clear skies, light traffic and a well-lit roadway. The speed of the first vehicle was a likely factor in the accident, police said.

Combined with an accident early Friday night that claimed the life of a pedestrian in Wahiawa, O'ahu's traffic death toll for the year now stands at 82, compared to 65 at the same time in 2005.
