    PICKING ISLAND WINNERS

Opals, Tahitian black pearls, fire agates and diamonds were among the most popular gems employed by Island designers as they sought the coveted awards of the Hawaii Jewelers Association annual juried contest last week.

Tahia Collins of Tahia Collins Moorea was named Designer of the Year for winning best in show with her exquisite "Coral Garden" necklace, in which she combined white gold with diamonds and seven Tahitian black pearls, each a different hue, ranging from pale silver to deep ocean blue.

Randy Oh of Raphaella Fine Jewelry won awards for the best design under $2,500 and best interpretation of a Hawaiian theme.

In the first category he won with "Prayer," a black pearl and diamond pendant; in the Hawaiian category he created "My Tiare," a graceful slide wire neckpiece of satin-finish yellow and white gold accented with fancy colored diamonds and Akoya pearls.

Tommy Kakesako of Kakesako Brothers Jewelers in downtown Honolulu, a respected name in the business for decades, was named Jeweler of the Year.
