On Nov. 5, 1916, The Sunday Advertiser reported on a special meeting to be held at the Outrigger Canoe Club on whether women guests of club members could be given privileges.

1942: Lt. Gen. Delos Emmons, military governor of Hawai'i, reveals a plan to relocate a number of Japanese civilians from Hawai'i to relocation centers on the Mainland. Emmons said there would not be a mass evacuation of Japanese civilians.

1967: A vigorous Kilauea eruption adds 12 feet of lava an hour to the floor of Halema'uma'u fire pit.

2002: Ernest Morgado, who changed the face of charity fundraising in Hawai'i when he came up with the idea of Huli-Huli chicken, dies at the age of 85. He was the head of Pacific Poultry when his first chickens were barbecued at a farmers' meeting in 1955. They were a hit, and he registered the trademark with the Territory of Hawai'i in 1958.
