Filipino essay contest honors sakada legacy

The Honolulu Filipino Junior Chamber of Commerce is hosting a statewide art and essay contest to commemorate Hawai'i's Filipino Centennial.

"The Future of Filipinos in Hawaii: Art & Essay Competition" will run from Nov. 1 to 24.

All public and private school students in grades K through 12 are encouraged to participate. The essay-writing portion is open only to high school students.

The theme for the contest is "The Sakada Legacy: Footprints of the Future."

Winners will receive monetary prizes and gift packs. The first-place essay winner will also get an Apple iPod Nano.

The 12 winning art pieces will be featured in the 2007 HFJCC Centennial Young Artists Calendar. The three winning essays will be published in the upcoming HFJCC publication.

All winners will be recognized and receive their prizes at the Legacy Musical Extravaganza on Dec. 16 at the Hawai'i Convention Center, in conjunction with the closing ceremonies of the Hawai'i Filipino Centennial celebrations.

Entries must be postmarked by Nov. 24 and submitted to:

Established in 1998, the Honolulu Filipino Junior Chamber of Commerce is a non-profit leadership and personal development organization of young adults between the ages of 18 and 40 who represent the Filipino heritage through community service projects.
